Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, Taste of Tehran offers a warm and inviting window into the world of Persian cuisine. While the restaurant might not boast an extravagant façade, the heart and soul of its offerings lie within its dishes, steeped in tradition and vibrant flavors. During my visit, I had the pleasure of trying the Boneless Chicken Kabob Wrap—a dish that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Persian culinary artistry.

A Warm Welcome

Walking into Taste of Tehran felt like being welcomed into someone’s home. The cozy atmosphere, coupled with the rich aroma of grilled meats and spices, set the stage for what promised to be an unforgettable meal. The staff exuded warmth, eager to share the stories and traditions behind their food.

The Boneless Chicken Kabob Wrap

The star of the visit, the Boneless Chicken Kabob Wrap, was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors. The chicken, marinated in a mix of saffron, yogurt, and Persian spices, was tender, juicy, and perfectly grilled. Each bite carried a subtle smokiness, balanced by the tangy marinade.

Wrapped in freshly baked lavash bread, the kabob was accompanied by a medley of crisp vegetables, including lettuce, tomatoes, and thinly sliced onions, all dressed in a light yogurt sauce. The sauce added a creamy tang, tying the components together with finesse. A sprinkle of sumac provided a burst of citrusy brightness, enhancing the dish’s depth.

A Sip of Persia

To complement my meal, I opted for a glass of doogh, a traditional Persian yogurt drink. Slightly salty with a hint of mint, it provided a refreshing contrast to the robust flavors of the kabob.

Beyond the Wrap

Though the Boneless Chicken Kabob Wrap was my main focus, the menu offered a plethora of enticing options, from hearty stews to aromatic rice dishes. Each plate passing by my table hinted at the same meticulous attention to detail and respect for tradition.

A Culinary Treasure

Taste of Tehran is more than just a restaurant; it’s an experience. The flavors transported me to the streets of Tehran, where food isn’t just nourishment—it’s a celebration of culture and community. The Boneless Chicken Kabob Wrap is a must-try for anyone looking to savor authentic Persian cuisine in the heart of Los Angeles.

If you find yourself in the area, make it a point to stop by and immerse yourself in the flavors of Persia. Taste of Tehran is a reminder of how food can transcend borders, telling stories that connect us all.

Ingredients

  • Protein
  • 1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • Marinade
  • 1 1/2 cups plain coconut yogurt

  • 2 large cloves garlic finely minced

  • 1 tsp ground coriander

  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin

  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt

  • 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper

  • Salad
  • 2 large handfuls chopped Romaine lettuce hearts

  • 1/4 cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves

  • 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes

  • 1 cup thinly sliced English or Persian cucumbers

  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion

  • Others
  • 1 lemon

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

  • 6 gluten-free flatbreads or wraps

  • Alternative Ingredients:
  • Plain Yogurt: Replace with dairy-free coconut yogurt to accommodate dairy allergies.

  • Flatbreads: Use gluten-free wraps as a substitute for those with gluten sensitivities.

  • Chicken Breasts: Substitute with turkey breast for a different protein option.

  • Lemon: Lime juice can be used instead of lemon for a tangier flavor profile.

  • Garlic: Garlic powder can replace fresh garlic if needed.

Directions

  • Marinate Chicken: Begin by cutting the chicken into 1½-inch pieces. In a medium-sized bowl, combine 1 cup of coconut yogurt with the finely minced garlic, ground coriander, ground turmeric, ground cumin, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Add the chicken pieces to the marinade, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to deeply penetrate the meat.
  • Prepare Skewers: If you’re using wooden skewers, soak them in water for about 20 minutes to prevent burning during grilling. Once soaked, thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the skewers. Gently wipe off any excess yogurt from the chicken to avoid flare-ups on the grill.
  • Grill Chicken: Preheat your grill to a medium-high heat. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for approximately 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is browned on all sides and fully cooked through.
  • Assemble Salad: While the chicken is grilling, prepare the fresh salad. In a large bowl, combine the chopped Romaine lettuce, roughly chopped mint leaves, halved cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced cucumbers, and sliced red onion. In a small bowl, squeeze the juice of one lemon and mix it with the extra-virgin olive oil. Drizzle this dressing over the salad and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Toss everything together until well combined.
  • Warm Wraps: Just before serving, place the gluten-free flatbreads on the grill for about 1-2 minutes on each side until they are warm and pliable.
  • Serve Wraps: Remove the chicken from the skewers and lay the grilled pieces onto each warmed flatbread. Add a generous spoonful of the fresh salad and a drizzle of the remaining coconut yogurt. Roll up the wraps tightly and serve immediately for a delicious and healthy meal.
