If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a dining experience that feels like a journey through rich flavors and an artistic approach to food, Dunsmoor in Los Angeles is the place to be. Nestled in the heart of LA’s vibrant culinary scene, this spot is a blend of inventive, locally sourced ingredients and carefully crafted dishes that make it stand out from the crowd.

First Impressions: A Modern, Inviting Atmosphere

As soon as you step inside Dunsmoor, you’re immediately drawn into its warm yet sophisticated ambiance. The sleek interior blends rustic elements with modern design, creating an inviting space for both intimate dinners and lively gatherings. The staff welcomes you with enthusiasm and knowledge, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable dining experience.

The Star of the Show: Mushroom-Crusted Pork Chop

I couldn’t resist trying their Mushroom-Crusted Pork Chop, a dish that quickly became the highlight of my visit. From the moment it arrived at the table, I was mesmerized by its presentation: the thick, juicy pork chop, perfectly golden and encrusted with a blend of earthy mushrooms, stood out against a backdrop of vibrant, seasonal vegetables.

The first bite was a revelation. The crust was rich and savory, with the mushrooms adding a delightful umami punch that perfectly complemented the pork’s tender, juicy texture. The pork itself was expertly cooked—crispy on the outside, yet incredibly moist and flavorful on the inside. The combination of the mushrooms and the pork was nothing short of divine, a balance of textures and flavors that had me savoring every bite.

What really impressed me was how Dunsmoor elevates the familiar. While pork chops are often a comfort food, this dish had a sophisticated touch that made it feel fresh and new. The balance of flavors—earthy mushrooms, savory meat, and the subtle sweetness of the accompanying vegetables—was flawless. It felt like a dish meant to be savored slowly, allowing every nuance of flavor to shine.

The Sides: Perfect Pairings

The Mushroom-Crusted Pork Chop was accompanied by a selection of seasonal sides that were equally as impressive. The vegetables were impeccably fresh, with a touch of char that added a smoky complexity to each bite. A light drizzle of herb-infused oil tied everything together, and I found myself enjoying each side as much as the main dish itself.

A Final Toast to a Memorable Experience

No meal is complete without a well-paired drink, and Dunsmoor offers a carefully curated wine list to complement the flavors of the dishes. I chose a light, crisp white wine that paired beautifully with the richness of the pork chop and mushrooms, enhancing the overall dining experience.

As the meal came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. Dunsmoor manages to take traditional ingredients and elevate them to new heights, creating an unforgettable culinary adventure. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Los Angeles, this restaurant is a must-try for anyone seeking a unique, flavorful journey that will leave you craving more.

Ingredients

  • Mushroom Crust
  • 1 stick unsalted butter softened

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 1 tsp kosher salt

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp fresh thyme chopped

  • Olive Oil
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • Main Ingredient
  • pork chops

  • Alternative Ingredients:
  • Panko Breadcrumbs: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option.

  • Truffle Slices: Substitute with truffle oil if unavailable or to reduce cost.

  • Unsalted Butter: Replace with vegan butter for a dairy-free version.

  • Kosher Salt: Use low-sodium salt to reduce sodium intake.

  • Fresh Thyme: Dried thyme can be used as an alternative.

Directions

  • Prepare Mushrooms and Truffles: Begin by removing the stems from the baby portabella mushrooms. Place them in the microwave for 60 seconds to soften and release their juices. Once cooled, blend the mushrooms with truffle slices using a food processor or immersion blender until a smooth paste forms. This should take about 5 minutes.
  • Create the Mushroom Crust: In a mixing bowl, combine the mushroom-truffle paste with softened unsalted butter, panko breadcrumbs, chopped fresh thyme, garlic powder, and kosher salt. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated. Form the mixture into a thick log shape using plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours to harden, approximately 180 minutes.
  • Cook the Pork Chops: Heat a cast iron skillet over high heat for about 2 minutes until very hot. Add olive oil to the skillet. Season the pork chops generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Place the chops in the skillet and let them sear without moving for 2 minutes to develop a crust. Flip the chops and cook for another 2 minutes on the opposite side.Savory Mushroom Pork Chops_post4
  • Apply the Crust and Broil: Take two thick slices of the hardened mushroom crust and place them atop each pork chop. Transfer the skillet to the oven under the broiler for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the crust to set and become crispy.Savory Mushroom Pork Chops_post1
  • Serve and Enjoy: Carefully remove the skillet from the oven. Let the pork chops rest for a minute before serving to ensure juices are sealed. Enjoy your savory mushroom pork chops with your choice of sides. Optional: Garnish with additional fresh thyme for presentation.Savory Mushroom Pork Chops_done1
